Why Your Pokémon's CP Matters in 'Pokémon GO'
There are plenty of ways to get your hands on some pretty powerful Pokémon in Pokémon GO, but if you don't understand the stats of your Pokémon, it'll be hard to use them to your advantage.
Different values assigned to the Pokémon you capture will quickly tell you how the Pokémon will perform in battle, and these stats are a bit different than the ones you're likely used to in traditional Pokémon games. For example, what does CP mean? Let's break it down.

What does CP stand for?
In Pokémon GO, CP stands for "Combat Power" and is entirely separate from the Pokémon's Hit Points (HP). While the two usually correlate (meaning a higher CP will yield a higher HP), the CP is important if you want to use the Pokémon in battle.
A Pokémon with a higher CP will perform better than one with a lower CP. While you can use type advantages in a lot of instances to help you take down a Pokémon with a higher CP, if there's too big a difference it won't do you any good.

The CP number won’t be revealed until you’ve caught it.
Just like when you first start the game. The first few levels a large number of Pokemon don’t show what CP it is until caught.
Usually associated with high numbers due to its high power up level.

Pokemon Go Guide: What is CP and How to Raise it
This article is over 8 years old and may contain outdated information
The toughest part about Pokemon Go, and there are many tough parts to the game, is just figuring out what all the acronyms and systems are. Some of these are very important, if you wish to get far in the game. For example, do you know what transfers do? We Laid it out right here. Now its time for another one. What is CP in Pokemon Go?
CP stands for Combat Power, and its a stat unlike any other in Pokemon. The CP of a Pokemon is essentially its singular stat that indicates its power. Whereas a regular Pokemon game might have a level, attack power, defense power, and more, Pokemon Go skips all this and just gives you one single stat for the power and level of your Pokemon.
Once you learn this its easy to sort out the rest. Using this CP number and the Pokemon type you can figure out what the best matchup is when taking on gyms. You can also determine which Pokemon are important, making choices about which to catch and keep. CP sort of trumps all other considerations when determining which Pokemon are most important to you in Pokemon
CP Calculator
This tool works in exactly the opposite way as the IV calculator, and calculates the CP, HP, and Stats of your Pokémon from its level and IVs. This is useful if you're looking to see how a specific Pokémon fares at a higher level, or looking for the best PVP Pokémon for the leagues that are limited by CP.
